CooperVision has introduced its Made Better Promise, a global sustainability platform aimed at advancing environmentally responsible practices across the lifecycle of its products. According to a press release, the initiative debuts with the MyDay daily disposable contact lens family and is positioned as an extension of the company’s ongoing sustainability efforts across materials sourcing, manufacturing efficiency, and plastic waste mitigation.
Specifically, the plastic used in MyDay blister packs is described as 100% ISCC PLUS-certified bioattributed material that is allocated through a mass balance approach. CooperVision states in the press release that it is the first contact lens manufacturer to adopt this certification.
The company also reports that its manufacturing processes were designed to reduce its carbon footprint through next-generation technologies and improved resource efficiency, such as using lower-carbon energy sources where feasible and waste reduction practices at production facilities. CooperVision indicates that its manufacturing sites recycle more than 90% of waste generated.
The Made Better Promise also incorporates CooperVision’s existing net plastic neutrality program, which is conducted in partnership with Plastic Bank. The program supports the collection and recycling of plastic waste from coastal communities, as well as positive socioeconomic impacts, the company noted in the press release. To date, the effort has resulted in the collection and recycling of more than 659 million plastic bottles, the company said.
CooperVision describes Made Better as an ongoing commitment, with plans for continued advancements in materials, technologies, and manufacturing processes to further reduce environmental impact over time, while maintaining product quality.
