WHEN I BECAME EDITOR IN CHIEF of Contact Lens Spectrum in 2008, I knew the contact lens field was on the verge of a major transformation. Over the past 18 years and more than 200 editorials—the speed and scope of that transformation have been remarkable. Reflecting on that journey as Contact Lens Spectrum concludes it celebration of its 40th anniversary in 2026 makes this moment especially meaningful to me.
In my early years, there was significant discussion that often centered on foundational materials science: navigating the shift to high-Dk silicone hydrogel materials, addressing contact lens dropout driven by end-of-day dryness, and optimizing the material/care solution/ocular surface interaction. Today, those challenges have evolved into sophisticated, multifaceted clinical opportunities. We have watched advancements extend from myopia correction to outright myopia control. We have witnessed transformation in specialty and scleral contact lenses. We have seen ocular surface treatments go from symptom relief to surface restoration. The list goes on and on.
None of this progress occurred in a vacuum. It was driven by the curiosity, dedication, and clinical expertise of our readers, authors, reviewers, editorial professionals, and industry partners. Throughout my tenure with Contact Lens Spectrum, your ideas, questions, discoveries, and willingness to engage in clinical debate continually shaped both the publication and my own thinking. Sharing this groundbreaking research, clinical debate, and technological breakthroughs has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. I am deeply grateful for that experience, even as the time has come for me to step aside from this role.
While my chapter as editor in chief is ending, I am thrilled that Jenny Fogt, OD, MS, will succeed me as Contact Lens Spectrum’s fifth editor in chief. Her knowledge, perspective, and commitment to contact lenses gives me confidence in the publication’s next chapter.
The foundation we have built together supports the next generation of innovation in anterior segment care, contact lens design, and patient-centered treatment optimization. Thank you for your trust, your readership, and your unwavering commitment to advancing contact lenses. It has been an honor to learn from you and share this perspective with you month after month.
